The National Rifle Association of the United Kingdom first sent a representative team to compete against the Guernsey Rifle Club in 1938. The match was attended by the then Lieutenant Governor, Major General Sir Edward Broadbent, the Bailiff, Sir Victor Carey, and Major General Sir Alan Hunter, Lord Cottesloe’s representative from the National Rifle Association. Guernsey won the match by nine points, with the top score of 99 ex 105 being made by Bert Falla.

Since 1957, the winner of the match has been awarded the perpetual RW Randall Memorial Trophy, a silver Guernsey can, presented by FJ Cope and members of that year’s National Rifle Association team. Today, the National Rifle Association use the tour as something of a testing ground for future Great Britain talent.

As of 2025, the National Rifle Association has won the match 48 times, ahead of the Guernsey Rifle Club’s 18 wins. The match was not contested in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The record team score of 1195.160v ex 1200.240v was set by the National Rifle Association team in 2016. That year, the Guernsey Rifle Club team set its record team score of 1185.152v. In the 2018 match, Nick Thompson set the record individual score of 150.25v ex 150.30v, shooting for the Guernsey Rifle Club (which was later equalled by the National Rifle Association’s Luke Crisp, in 2025).

The Guernsey Rifle Club and National Rifle Association teams pose together for a team photograph after the inaugural match in 1938.
