CHANNEL ISLANDS CHAMPIONSHIP

First stage – Concurrent with the Leale. Open to members of the Guernsey Rifle Club who were born on the island or qualify for local residency. The Jersey Rifle Association will determine its eight second stage qualifiers at its discretion.

Second stage – Open to the top eight competitors from the first stage from the Guernsey Rifle Club and the Jersey Rifle Association, respectively. Contested shoulder-to-shoulder alternating annually between Crabbé, Jersey, and Fort Le Marchant, Guernsey. Distances: 300, 500, and 600 yards. Number of shots: 2 sighting shots and 10 shots to count at each distance.

Final stage – Open to all second stage qualifiers. When the second stage is contested in Guernsey, the Guernsey Rifle Club reserves the right to hold the final stage at Fort Le Marchant, shooting 2 sighting shots and 15 rounds to count at 300 and 600 yards each, instead of 900 and 1000 yards. Distances: 900 and 1000 yards, at Les Landes, Jersey. Number of shots: 2 sighting shots and 15 shots to count at each distance. First Prize: A silver trophy presented jointly by TS Henry, President of the Guernsey Rifle Club, and Lieutenant Commander DP Richardson, President of the Jersey Rifle Association, and first awarded in 1976; to be awarded to the competitor with the highest aggregate score over the second and third stages combined. A tie for the first prize will be shot off on the spot.

Six Guernseymen have won the Channel Islands Championship: Richard Perkins (in 1977), Bob Courtney (in 1986,’87,’89,’93), Ian Donaldson (in 1992), Peter Jory (in 2003,’12), Nick Mace (in 2010), and Nick Branch (in 2018), while thirteen Jersey shootists have won the competition.

Jersey marksmen Barry Le Cheminant and Colin Mallett have the most Channel Islands Championship wins (7 each).

Nick Mace set the current championship record score of 300.51v ex 300.60v in 2010, when he won the competition with a rarely seen 75.15v ex 75.15v in the final at 1000 yards.

Both of Peter Jory’s Channel Islands crowns were awarded after 900 yards, with both years’ final stages being abandoned after the shorter distance due to poor weather conditions.

In 2020 and 2021, the Channel Islands Championship was not contested due to travel restrictions owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was also not contested in 2022 due to travel disruption.

The final of the 2023 championship was held in Guernsey, at 300 and 600 yards, in accordance with the special rule (above). That year’s champion, Jersey’s Libby Hart, is the youngest at age 16.
