Having been evacuated from the Island with his mother in 1940, Alan returned in 1945 and joined Elizabeth College. He shot for the College VIII at Bisley in his final two years, captaining the team in 1947, his final year.

Alan returned to shooting in 1959, making the first of fifty unbroken visits to Bisley. That year, he qualified for the second stage of the Queen’s Prize. He would go on to make the Queen’s final twice, in 1977 and 1984. He captained the Island to six Junior Overseas wins in the 1980s and 1990s.

Alan won three Island Championships in four years between 1971 and 1974, losing out to Tommy Henry in 1972. He won the Grand Aggregate in 1969 and 1971.

In 1988, Alan was Vice Captain of the Channel Islands Rifle Team for the Australian Centennial Championships. He also toured with the Channel Islands team to South Africa in 1999 and Canada in 2007.

Having partially lost vision in his right (shooting) eye in 2008, Alan had offset sights fitted to his rifle and continued to shoot, making his final appearance at Bisley in 2010, the year of his eightieth birthday.
