MACKINNON
Guernsey first entered the senior Mackinnon match in 1905, shooting against teams from Scotland, Canada, the South African province of Transvaal, England, and New Zealand.
As of 2024, Guernsey has made 46 appearances in the senior Mackinnon, in 1905, 1906, 1909 through 1912, 1914 ,1922, 1925 through 1931, 1936, 1937, 1990, 1995 through 2019, and 2021 through 2024, but is yet to win the match.
The island has made a further 23 appearances as part of a combined Channel Islands team, in 1934, 1935, 1947 through 1955, 1981 through 1989, 1991 through 1993, and 2020.
The match was not contested from 1915 through 1918 or 1940 through 1945. In 1907, 1908, 1913, 1919 through 1921, 1923, 1924, 1932, 1933, 1938, 1939, 1946, 1956 through 1980, and 1994, neither a Guernsey nor a Channel Islands team entered the senior Mackinnon.
Guernsey’s highest score in the Mackinnon is 1159.123v ex 1200.240v, achieved in 2021 with an encouragingly young squad including six Guernsey debutants.
As of 2024, 150 individuals have represented Guernsey in the senior Mackinnon. Peter Jory has the most appearances in the match for Guernsey (30) and the most combined appearances for Guernsey and the Channel Islands (33). Danny Yeadon appeared 11 times for the Channel Islands, more than any other Guernseyman.
In 2001, Peter Jory broke the individual Mackinnon record, scoring 100.17v ex 100.20v. Peter was coached by his father, David, whose suggestions he reputedly ignored. The record stood for eighteen years until Glyn Barnett, shooting for England, scored 100.19v in 2019.
As of 2024, Five double possibles have been made in the match by Guernseymen. Nine possibles have been made at 1000 yards by seven different firers, while fifty-one possibles have been made at 900 yards by twenty-four different firers.
Nick Mace is the only Guernseyman to have scored more than one double possible in the match, while Alexander Stewart is surely the youngest competitor from any nation to achieve a double possible, being aged just fifteen when he scored 100.13v in 2021.
Keith Cunningham shot the Mackinnon for Guernsey, the Channel Islands, and Scotland, on a number of different occasions, winning the match with Scotland in 1957 and 1975. Charles Trotter never appeared for Guernsey, but represented the Channel Islands nine times, and Scotland twice (in 1948 and 1964).
Often unable to enter a team into the twelve-man senior match, Guernsey opted to enter the four-man Junior Mackinnon in the 1960s and 70s. These teams dominated the match over this period, winning four times in a row from 1962–65, and then in 1969 and 1970.
Winning Guernsey team members during this era include Frank Le Maître, Bruce Parker, Evan Ozanne, Mike Martel, William Mahy, Don Bisset, John Ross, A Le P Avenell, PWM Hall, Tommy Henry, Alan Le Page, David Jory, Les Hill, and Charles Trotter.
