ST GEORGE’S
Out of the “big three” individual competitions, Guernsey has found the most success in the St George’s.
John Mahy was the first islander to win the Gold Cross in 1901, before three wins came in relatively quick succession for Geoff Martel in 1958, Frank Le Maître in 1961 and Mike Martel 1968.
As of 2025, twenty-seven islanders have finished in the top twenty-five of the St George’s a total of 52 times.
Mike Martel and Nick Mace have the most top twenty-five finishes (7). Mike also has the record for the most years between his first and last top twenty-five finish (26 years, between 1961 and 1987).
John Ross and Alexander Stewart were runners-up in 1962 and 2024, respectively, and Daniel Le Poidevin finished third in 1903. Other top ten finishers include Nick Mace, Max Barber, JH Falla, CF Beck, Andy Burton, Ernie Despointes, Simon Stewart-Fry, Peter Jory, T Aldridge and Alan Le Page.
